What Does It All Mean?
Food shopping should be fun, but these days it's downright confusing. Just trying to eat well and make healthy and nutritious meals for our families has gotten more and more complicated. Hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, mad cow disease, genetic modification - what impact do these issues have on our diet, our health, our waterways, our soil? How can the average person sift through confusing labeling, conflicting news reports, and unfamiliar terminology in order to select foods that are truly healthy and nutritious?
With The Organic Food Guide, Steve Meyerowtz, aka "Sproutman," author of nine other books on diet and nutrition, guides you through this maze of tough health issues and new food choices. He steers you to healthier foods and shows you how to find the bargains, too.
Learn the answers to these and other questions:
• How can you save money buying organic foods?
• Is there a difference between "organic" and "all natural"?
• Are organic foods really healthier? Safer?
• Do organic foods contain more vitamins and minerals?
• Can pesticides in conventional foods cause cancer?
• Are organic meats lower in fat?
• Is the USDA organic seal required on all organic foods?
"Unprecedented growth and consumer confidence in organic agriculture...means new choices for consumers and new markets for farmers. The Organic Food Guide will help consumers make sense of all these new choices. It's as timely as the next trip to the grocery store or farmers' market."
- Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.)
"father" of the federal organic standards and labeling program
About the Author
Steve Meyerowitz was nicknamed "Sproutman" in the 1970s because his New York City apartment was always packed with gardens of home-grown, organic baby vegetables. They were part of his lifetime fight against chronic allergies and asthma. After twenty years of disappointment with conventional medicine techniques, he became symptom-free through his personally designed program of diet, raw juices, and fasting. In 1980, he founded the Sprout House, a "no-cooking" school in New York City teaching the benfits of a "living foods" vegetarian diet.
Steve is a health crusader and author of nine other books, including Power Juices Super Drinks, Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine, Juice Fasting and Detoxification, and Food Combining and Digestion. He has been featured on television on PBS, the Home Shopping Network, QVC, and TV Food Network; and he has written features in Better Nutrition, Prevention, Organic Gardening, and House & Garden magazines. His "home-sprouters," the Freshlife Automatic Sprouter and the Hemp Sprout Bag, used for indoor organic gardening, are sold worldwide.
